Will Green Tech Save Us? (Post Growth Theory)
A green-tech approach is dominating our response to the ecological crisis. System change, not climate change! Together, we explore alternatives to “eternal economic growth”.
Learning Effort: 20 hours
Mode of Delivery: Online
Learning Outcomes:
• Can we 'Green' our Consumer Growth System? – In Module 1 students learn about the idea of 'greening' consumer growth, through renewable technologies. And how this 'Green' Growth idea has been positioned at the political/economic front line (such as at COP26) of meeting our now urgent ecological challenges. Students then gain an understanding of Green Growth assumptions and misconceptions by engaging an overview of ‘Limits to Growth’ scholarship;
• An Alternative to Growth - In Module 2, as an alternative to growth-oriented thinking (and its latest incarnation as ‘Green Growth’), students are introduced to 'Post Growth' and 'Degrowth' living models - exploring the implications for everyday life. Identify and apply creativity techniques in addressing everyday personal creativity.
• Obstacles and Transitions - In Module 3, students look at core structural obstacles to a post-consumer future, and practical models seeking to overcome those obstacles. Practical examples are drawn from emerging and pre-capitalist/indigenous modes of economy, such as urban commons.
To successfully finish the course, the participant completed the following elements:
• Completion of 3 online modules
• Reflections at the end of Modules 1 and 2
• Summary completion activity
